Powering the Journey: Managing Solar Energy on an Ocean Rowing Boat

When rowing across the ocean, managing power is critical. On True Blue, I rely entirely on solar energy from two panels — one on the bow and one on the stern — to run essential equipment like navigation, communication, and the water maker. These solar panels charge my boat’s batteries, which store the energy I’ll need throughout the day and night.

How Solar Panels Work
Solar panels use photovoltaic (PV) cells to convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. When sunlight hits the cells, it causes electrons to move, generating power that’s stored in the boat’s batteries. The efficiency of the panels depends on factors like sunlight intensity and cleanliness, so keeping them clear of dirt and salt is key to maximizing energy production.

Balancing Power Usage
Power management on the boat is all about balance. High-demand devices, like the water maker, require careful timing. Since it consumes a lot of energy, I’ll run it during peak sunlight hours, ensuring the solar panels are providing maximum charge. Essential equipment, like communication and navigation systems, needs to run continuously, so I must prioritize their power needs, especially at night or when the weather limits solar production.

Planning for Weather
Forward thinking with weather is essential. On sunny days, I can generate plenty of power, but overcast days reduce the solar output. This means I’ll need to plan ahead, using energy-intensive equipment when the sun is strong and conserving power when it’s cloudy. Monitoring my battery levels and adjusting my usage will ensure I have enough power to cover night-time needs and critical systems.

Final Thoughts
Managing power on an ocean rowing boat is as crucial as managing food or water. By balancing energy consumption, planning for changing weather, and keeping the solar panels clean, I’ll be able to stay powered up and focused on the journey ahead.
