Immersion suit

Having completed four Atlantic crossings, I understand firsthand the critical importance of safety at sea. One essential piece of safety equipment that I always emphasise is the immersion suit. Immersion suitThese suits are designed to protect against the harsh conditions of the open ocean, offering thermal insulation and buoyancy that can be lifesaving in the event of an emergency. During each of my crossings, donning an immersion suit has been a key drill practised rigorously before setting out. This drill ensures that every crew member is adept at quickly and correctly putting on the suit, reducing panic and increasing survival chances if we ever need to abandon ship.

Practising the use of immersion suits isn’t just a precautionary measure; it’s a vital part of ocean rowing preparation. These suits are engineered to prevent hypothermia by maintaining body heat, even in the coldest waters. They also improve buoyancy, making it easier to stay afloat while awaiting rescue. Bright colours and reflective strips enhance visibility, crucial for being spotted by rescue teams. By incorporating immersion suit drills into my pre-crossing preparations, I ensure that safety remains paramount, giving me the confidence to tackle the immense challenges of ocean rowing.
