BGAN system communications

Another essential piece of communication equipment for my solo ocean rowing crossing is the BGAN (Broadband Global Area Network) system. BGAN is a satellite-based communication technology that provides reliable, high-speed internet connectivity and voice communication anywhere in the world. This system uses a compact, portable terminal that connects to geostationary satellites, enabling me to access the internet, send emails, and make voice calls even in the middle of the ocean.

The terminal is user-friendly, designed to be set up quickly and easily, and capable of withstanding harsh marine environments. Once the terminal is aligned with a satellite, it creates a broadband connection that supports internet access, which is crucial for receiving weather updates, navigating software, and maintaining contact with my support team via email or video calls.

For my solo ocean crossing, the BGAN system is invaluable for several reasons. First, it ensures that I have access to real-time weather forecasts, which is crucial for planning and adjusting my route to avoid severe weather conditions. Second, it allows me to stay in touch with my support team and loved ones, providing updates on my progress and any potential issues I might encounter. Third, and equally important, the BGAN system enables me to send images and videos to my PR team for social media posts. This real-time sharing allows me to document my journey, engage with my audience, and keep supporters informed and involved. Finally, in case of an emergency, the BGAN system allows me to communicate quickly and effectively with rescue services, enhancing my overall safety and preparedness throughout the journey. With the BGAN system, I can maintain a crucial link to the outside world, ensuring a safer, more informed, and interactive crossing.
