LESS THAN 1000 NAUTICAL MILES TO GOOOOOO!!!
This is SUCH a huge milestone in the crossing – and it’s not just because of an imaginary line she’s crossed…
As Annasley rows she has a couple of digital screens in front of her called ‘deck repeaters’. These screens repeat some of the information from the main chart plotter inside the cabin. It allows her to see things like speed and course without having to get off the oars, and go inside to check it.
One of the readouts shows her how far she has left to her final waypoint; Barbados. Up until now, it’s read ‘1003 NM’, then about 20-30 minutes of rowing later it’s flicked down to ‘1002’, then ‘1001, etc. But now that she’s below the 1000 nautical miles to go mark, there is room for a decimal place.
Now the digital read out says ‘999.9’, then just 2-3 minutes later ‘999.8’, then ‘999.7’ etc. She isn’t going any faster, but the feedback on her distance is 10 times more frequent. Now it feels more like real-time feedback on her effort – she can row really hard for 90 seconds and see if she can make it drop a decimal place in that time – the mileage genuinely feels like it’s tumbling now!
